Budapest Christmas Market at St Stephen’s Basilica: Dates, Tickets and Our December Visit
In December we spent a few hours around Szent István tér in Budapest, and it turned out to be one of the easiest parts of the trip: a Christmas market right in front of St Stephen’s Basilica, the church itself, and the Budapest Eye a short walk away.
Here is what we did, how I’d plan it, and the practical details I checked for the next season.
Advent Bazilika 2026: dates, hours and our walk
The Christmas market at the basilica is called Advent Bazilika. For 2026 it runs from 13 November to 1 January. Opening times can shift, so check the market’s own page before you go.
We were in Budapest with friends, a couple who travelled with us for the whole trip, and we came across the market on our way, so we decided to look around. We didn’t buy anything. We walked slowly between the wooden stalls, past tables of nutcrackers and ornaments and a wall of chocolate bars in red and gold wrapping. With the basilica behind the stalls, the setting does most of the work.
There is a Starbucks right next to the market, and we stopped in. I forgot to buy the Budapest mug for my collection, so that’s on the list for next time.

- Mon–Thu, Sun 11–22Friday and Saturday until 23:00
- 24 Dec 11–1525–26 Dec until 20:00 · 31 Dec until 3:00 · 1 Jan until 18:00
The interior is beautiful, with a gilded dome you can’t stop looking up at.
Inside St Stephen’s Basilica
I hadn’t planned to go inside. The door alone looked incredible, and I’m very glad I peeked in.
The interior is beautiful, with a gilded dome you can’t stop looking up at, rows of candles and, at Christmas, a nativity scene among the trees. If you’re in Budapest, this is a must-visit for me.
St Stephen’s Basilica tickets: prices and where to buy
Entry to the church itself is ticketed. These are the adult prices on the official page when I checked:
- Church: 2,600 Ft. The panoramic terrace and treasury together are 5,000 Ft, and the combined ticket for all three is 6,800 Ft.
- With a Hungary Card or Budapest Card you pay roughly 20% less: church 2,100 Ft, terrace and treasury 4,000 Ft, combined 5,400 Ft. Children under 6 enter free.
- To buy on the spot, go to the ticket office at the basilica, open every day from 9:00 to 18:30.
- The church is open Monday to Saturday from 9:00 to 17:45, and on Sundays only from 13:00 to 17:45. The terrace and treasury are open 9:00 to 19:00. If you’re coming on a Sunday, aim for the afternoon.
Reach the ticket office well before closing. Official page with prices and hours.
The Budapest Eye
I went up on the Budapest Eye with my friend. We went after lunch, and the queue was small: we waited about 10 to 15 minutes for the previous round to finish. It was very beautiful, and from the cabin we could see the basilica among the rooftops. I’d absolutely try it.
A standard ticket is 4,900 Ft for adults (my ticket from December also said 4,900), and 2,900 Ft for children aged 2 to 11. The wheel stands on Erzsébet tér and is open daily, 11:00–23:00, and until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. See the official site for current prices.
Budapest Christmas market, basilica and Eye in one afternoon
The three places are close enough to do in one afternoon. I’d go into the basilica first, walk through the market, and keep the Eye for after lunch, when the queue was short for us.
If you only have time for two, I’d choose the basilica and the market and treat the wheel as a bonus.
On the same trip we also had a bakery breakfast and a quiet dinner in the city centre.
