Bad Gastein in Winter: What to Know Before Your First Visit
My husband and I spent four nights in Bad Gastein in December 2025. Our days followed a simple rhythm: breakfast, skiing, the hotel spa and dinner. The town is worth visiting for the views alone, but the practical lesson of our trip was about where to stay. Bad Gastein is hilly, and the waterfall, the railway station and the ski lift are three different points to plan around.
A mountain town with a waterfall at its centre
There wasn’t much snow for late December, but the scenery was beautiful. The waterfall next to our hotel looked stunning, and it gives the town its character: mountain views and rushing water among the buildings. The official town guide describes the Belle Époque architecture and the central waterfall. You can come for the town as much as for the slopes.
So a short distance on the map doesn’t tell you much.
Where to stay in Bad Gastein: the hills decide how your day feels
There is a lot of walking up and down. It didn’t stop us from going out, and the streets weren’t slippery during our stay, but a stroll through town and a climb before skiing are very different things.
We stayed beside the waterfall at Badeschloss. Some days we walked up to the lift, and some days we drove; I usually walked back downhill on my own. I wrote about the room, breakfast and spa in my Badeschloss review.
So a short distance on the map doesn’t tell you much. Before booking, look at the actual route to the places you’ll use most, including which way it slopes. If skiing is the main reason for your trip, being close to the lift may matter more than being beside the waterfall. If you want town walks and a hotel you’ll spend time in, the waterfall may be the better base. Either way, bring comfortable shoes.
The station and the lift
The lift to look for is Stubnerkogelbahn. According to the official arrival information, an overpass connects Bad Gastein railway station with the valley station and Felsentherme. If you arrive by train or plan several mountain days, that area is worth locating before you choose a hotel. Check the route from the station to your hotel too, especially with luggage. What a day on the slopes cost us, from the pass to the rental, is in my ski day breakdown.
Travelling without a car is also possible. The Guest Mobility Ticket covers eligible public transport for overnight guests in Salzburg province during their stay. Ask your accommodation about it. It is not a ski-lift ticket.
Spa and things to do when you’re not skiing
After skiing, we usually returned to our hotel spa before dinner.
If you don’t ski, Stubnerkogelbahn also offers tickets for an ascent and descent without skis, listed in Skigastein’s pedestrian-ticket information. For a spa outing, Felsentherme is opposite the railway station. We used our hotel spa, so I can’t review it, but it is an option for time off the slopes.
Before you go
- Lift access: check the route from your hotel to Stubnerkogelbahn, including the slope, before booking.
- Station: check the route from the railway station to your hotel if you’re arriving by train.
- Guest Mobility Ticket: ask your accommodation whether and how it is issued, and check the journeys you need.
- Pedestrian tickets and Felsentherme: check operating dates and conditions for your visit.
Four nights felt right for us. If you want a winter break with skiing, mountain views and time to relax, Bad Gastein is worth considering. Choose your base around the days you want to have, with the hills in mind as well as the distance on the map. If you are packing for the cold, my morning skincare routine for dry skin is from this trip.
